A total of 20 Taiwan restaurants earned a nod of approval as go-to places for fine dining in the latest edition of U.K.-based food guide “Where Chefs Eat.”

Ranging from Michelin-starred steamed dumpling mecca Din Tai Fung and L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon to the traditional fare of Keelung City’s Miaoko Night Market, the comprehensive list—compiled by interviewing chefs for their personal favorites—mirrors the diverse spectrum of Taiwan’s food culture.

Taiwan-born Andre Chiang, head chef of the Singapore-based Restaurant Andre, said No.1 on his list is Sasa Sushi in downtown Taipei. “I always come back to it when I return home.”

Hailed as one of the most innovative chefs around, Chiang said his recommendation is based on appreciation of the establishment’s painstaking preparations in making authentic Japanese cuisine.

The same attention to detail and dedication to recreating exotic flavors is reflected in Belgian chef Nicolas De Visch’s choices, which include Belgian Beer Cafe, Fifi Tea House, Juding Shabu Shabu, Shotaro Japanese Barbecue and Yakitori Hachibei. The variety of cuisines represented in his list is testament to the passion of local foodies for the latest and greatest tastes from around the globe.

Shin Yeh, a tourist favorite for local Holo dishes, earned two mentions on the list. Its restaurant on the 85th floor of landmark Taipei 101, the tallest green building in the world, is praised equally for exquisite food and stunning views.

Another highlight is the dazzling display of hot pot restaurants such as A-Cai mutton, Laujio Manchurian and Tripod King. Other establishments named by food connoisseurs include teppanyaki house Ben Cuisine, Boon Keng Chi Chicken, Da-Wan Barbecue, Shoraku Sushi and Zen-style Shi-Yang Culture Restaurant. Most of the listed eateries can be found in Greater Taipei.

“Where Chefs Eat: A Guide to Chefs’ Favorite Restaurants” is published by Phaidon Press of the U.K. The 2015 edition launched in February features more than 3,000 restaurants in more than 70 countries and territories. (YHC-JSM)
